NATHIST Statement on Collections in Ramat Gan

20181107_112612

On November 8, 2018, in Ramat Gan, Israel, the membership of ICOM NATHIST agreed to make a global, collective statement about the importance of proper stewardship of collections, and the provision of adequate resourcing those activities appropriately.

The statement comes in the wake of the devastating fire in the Rio de Janeiro’s National Museum, that destroyed an enormous amount of irreplaceable damage.  It was all too similar to the fire in 2016 that burnt the National Natural History Museum in New Delhi to the ground. These, as well as other important and avoidable disasters, precipitated this decision.

The statement:

ICOM NATHIST would like to express its deep concern regarding the preservation of natural history collections world-wide. These collections face unique and mounting risks regarding their preservation and care. ICOM NATHIST urges those entrusted with resourcing the stewardship of these treasures to recognize their value and ensure their ongoing protection.
